The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality, reproduction print of an 1881 chromolithograph entitled “Heroes of the Colored Race”. Joseph Hoover & Sons of Philadelphia, one of the great lithographers of the era, did this sweeping portrayal of African-American history in 1881. It combines 11 portraits of white and black politicians of the era who helped end slavery in the United States of America. The print also features four panels illustrating various aspects of African-American life, both before and after emancipation.
CAPTION: “Heroes of the Colored Race” is the title given by the publisher in 1881.
In the center of the print are three stunning portraits of heroic African-American men as follows:
(Center) Frederick Douglass (1818 to 1895) was among the best-known African-American man of his generation. An ardent abolitionist, Douglas applied his skills as a writer, publisher and great orator to help the movement.
(Left of Douglass) Blanche Kelso Bruce (1841 to 1898) Senator Bruce represented Mississippi as a U.S. Senator from 1875 to 1881. He thereby became the first African-American to serve a full term in the United Stated Senate. At the end of his term, President James A. Garfield appointed Bruce to be the Register of the Treasury. Bruce thereby became the first African-American whose signature appeared on U.S. paper currency.
(Right of Douglass) Hiram Rhoades Revels (1822 to 1901) was a well-known African-American minister and educator who became the first African-American to serve in the United States Senate. After the Civil War ended, Revels moved to Mississippi where he continued his ministry and was elected to a variety of local and county positions. In 1870, Hiram Revels was elected to the United States Senate thereby becoming the first African-American to serve in that body. Because he was elected to fill the unexpired term of former Senator CSA President Jefferson Davis, he served only two years.

(L) Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the Unites States
