This humorous and whimsical Early American ale poster will make a great decoration for either a home or commercial bar. A bar maid is featured dancing with a dapper billy goat while both drink large steins of dark, frothy bock lager beer. A second billy goat, seated on a giant wooden bock beer barrel, provides the fiddle music for the dancing couple. During the Nineteenth century, lithograph companies produced stock posters such as this for saloons, bars and beer parlors to be used as decoration and to promote any of the beers they might be selling.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Bock beer is the name applied to a variety of dark, lager beers and ales that originated in German breweries but are now made in many countries. The beer was considered very special and was usually reserved for the religious festivals, frequently having been brewed by Roman Catholic Monks. The name bock is generally attributed to a perversion of the name Einbeck, a well-known German town, and morphed into ein bock. The wide use of the Billy Goat as a symbol for bock beer has the same derivations since ein is the German word for “a” and Bock in German means goat. Of course the reputation of the goat as a playful, fun-loving animal helped establish the icon.
