Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a beautiful new, high quality reproduction, print of an 1874 tobacco label poster for Grant’s Tobacco. A full-length dramatic portrait shows General Ulysses Simpson Grant during the Civil War. A proud, virulent Grant is portrayed standing in front of his Union Army tent, holding a cigar. Nearby soldiers hold a horse waiting for Grant. In the distant background is a fort over which the American Flag is flying. As a military commander, Grant is historically recognized as a brilliant strategist. The original label was created in 1874 while Grant was in his second term as 18th President of the United States and plagued by scandal and fiscal problems. Ironically, President U.S. Grant would die of throat cancer though it is unknown if it was tobacco related. Grant was Commander-In-Chief of the Union forces during the final years of the Civil War and penned a widely admired autobiography.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: At the time of the production of this label the civil war had been over a little less than ten years. Tobacco remained largely a southern commodity grown in the Carolinas and Virginia, among other states. If this was Southern-grown tobacco, it would have been prudent to use an icon of the Union Army to sell it.

CAPTION: Tobacco.

ARTWORK: As with many tobacco labels, an unknown artist produced a beautiful piece of artwork and it is even more brilliant when it is enlarged to this size.

PAPER QUALITY: This new print is on a highest quality, acid-free, 100-pound glossy premium text paper that allows for maximum color brilliance and fidelity for older images.

AVAILABILITY: In Stock! – Ships Within 1 Business Day of cleared payment.
