The poster features a coal miner, in a head-and-shoulders profile, wearing a traditional miner's lantern hat and carrying a pickaxe. Of course, Pennsylvania had been the scene of some of the most intense union versus industry throughout the previous decades. This is just a fantastic art work, using the best of the modern technique—which of course we call art deco today. This poster is so riveting, you tend not to notice how really simple it is.

ARTIST: Isadore Posoff did the poster in 1937. This is a great addition to any WPA poster collection.

At the depth of the Depression in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating the Works Progress Administration, or the WPA as it is commonly known. It was designed to put Americans, including members of the artistic community, to work. As part of the WPA, The Federal Arts Project was formed.

As part of the Federal Arts Project, artists were engaged to do local posters. The posters were designed to publicize exhibits, community activities, theatrical productions, and health and educational programs in seventeen states and the District of Columbia, with the strongest representation from California, Illinois, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. This poster is part of that body of work.
