This is undoubtedly one of hundreds of portraits done by the lithographers in the thirty years after the Civil War for sale. General Lee is astride a horse, his head turned to the right. Behind is a battle scene with Confederate soldiers in a variety of CSA uniforms, charging into a smoke covered battlefield.

The horse in the painting is probably meant to be Traveller, the most famous of General Lee's war horses. However, the colors are slightly different.

This romantic portrait of General Lee is among the most striking examples of this type of post-Civil War lithographs that we have found.
