This rare photo captures the immensity of the Hudson River, emphasized by the span of the railroad bridge behind it, and the physical strength needed to participate in any Poughkeepsie Regatta of that era. A beautiful photograph, especially in the large size and on the rich parchment-like paper that is sure to bring a smile to the face of any rowing enthusiast or Cornell alumni.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: A stretch of the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, New York became the site of the Poughkeepsie Regatta. A unique, four-mile straightaway at this particular point of the Hudson made it a logical choice for a race that pushed the endurance of sports rowing crews. By contrast, modern crew competitions are much shorter. Starting in 1895, the races were held in the spring of each year, although there were some war years when no races were held. With such a long race, large crowds used the embankments to view the competition and within a few years as many as ten thousand spectators viewed the competition. The Intercollegiate Rowing Association established the race. Following World War II the competition was held at other locations.
