CSA Confederate General Robert E Lee New Art Print 1867 Poster Civil War

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction print of an 1867, black and white engraving by J. C. McRae. General Robert E. Lee stands next to his tent in a Confederate States of America (CSA) camp. According to the Library of Congress notes and the notes on this print, McRae based his engraving on a post war photograph made by Mathew Brady, although a highly romanticized interpretation. However, Brady’s photo (taken a few days after Lee’s surrender) is in a different uniform, has none of the brass of his rank and he does not have a sword. However, it was common practice in this era to take considerable “artistic license” with a photograph, especially when doing an engraving. McRae did engrave many of Brady's photographs.

In this black and white engraving, General Robert E. Lee stands tall and erect, dressed in a CSA uniform. His left hand rests on his sword that in turn rests on the ground. He holds his hat in his right hand. He wears gloves on both hands. On a cot, next to his sword, a map rests, opened and with the Potomac River clearly visible. This is a proud and steadfast General Lee, portrayed by one of America’s most talented engravers.

Note: The text on the original of this print sustained age-related damage. To be as faithful to the original as possible, a restoration of the title for this version used Civil War era fonts.
