Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction, print of a magnificent 1865 Currier & Ives lithograph showing the New York funeral procession of President Abraham Lincoln.

The slain President’s body had been at the New York City Hall for public viewing. On Monday, April 25th, 1865, the body was transported on an exceptional funeral carriage to the Hudson River Railway Depot. This view is as the procession turns passing Union Square. This would be near where Theodore Roosevelt, then six years old, remembered watching from the second floor of his Grandfather’s house. More than 75,000 and perhaps as many as 150,000, people marched in the procession as more than a half million watched.

New York City undertaker, Peter Relyea, had built the magnificent funeral carriage pictured in this print. The platform on which the casket rested was almost seven feet wide and fourteen feet long. Feathers adorned the canopy on whose very top rested a gold and white with an American flag atop the dome, flying at half-mast. Three American flags were clumped around the four columns on each corner. Sixteen gray horses, each wearing a black blanket that nearly reached the ground, drew the carriage along the streets.

Along the route many building were draped in black crepe or had flags at half-mast. Every window and rooftop was filled by people, some of who had paid as much as $100 for the best views. All of the grandeur and tragedy are captured in this remarkable image.
