Entitled “The Lady With The Lamp”, Henrietta Rae painted this portrait for engraver Cassell & Company, capturing the events that catapulted Miss Nightingale into one of the most famous women of her generation. The work portrays Miss Nightingale comforting a wounded soldier in Scutari, Turkey during the Crimean War. In 1854, Florence Nightingale (with less than a hundred other women) arrived at the Selimiye Barracks in Scutari. They encountered the horrible conditions of military hospitals of the era. Her work there gained world attention and she committed the remainder of her life to care of the sick and wounded—laying the foundations of the modern nursing.
The work shows a woman, a white wrap around her, looking compassionately at the soldier whose jacket wraps around him and blood stains his shirt. The artist uses the light of the lamp and the white of her wrap to cast a brightness in the dark world of the hospital. Soldiers rest on beds behind them. Here is the magical moment that captures the compassion and care that exists between patient and nurse—offering a glimmer of hope where there had been none.
Florence Nightingale became known as “Lady with the lamp” based on a newspaper report of the time. In a poem titles "Santa Filomena", Henry Wadsworth Longfellow immortalized it when he wrote:
“Lo! in that hour of misery A lady with a lamp I see Pass through the glimmering gloom, And flit from room to room.
