The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a charming 1800s engraving of a Lily Martin Spencer work titled: “One of Life’s Happy Hours”.
In this piece, Spencer draws us to a joyous Mother and her child enjoying a moment of bliss. This elegant early American print captures an idealized scene of maternal love, making it an ideal gift for a mother—either on Mother’s Day, her birthday or any other special occasion. The style and coloring would also lend itself to decorating a nursery, girl’s room or any room that needs a feminine touch. The loving mother has her right arm around the waist of her child, both dressed in light, airy clothes that suggest, along with the flowers, a warm summer’s day after the child’s bath.
The child lovingly clings to her mother. Our guess is that most of us had this type of moment of sheer elation—and if we don’t remember it our mothers probably do. This placid scene celebrates maternal love and will surely warm the heart of every mother.

ORIGINAL MEDIA: Alfred Jones (1819-1900) of New York did the original lithograph on which this print is based. Jones was born in Liverpool, England. He emigrated to the United States and apprenticed in Albany, New York.
ARTIST: Lily Martin Spencer (nee Angelique Marie Martin) was born in Exeter, England in 1822. At the age of eight, she and her parents came to the United States where they settled in Ohio. Lilly was home schooled and soon took lessons from local area artists. She was artistic and her talent was recognized early on. At the age of twenty-two Lilly married Benjamin R. Spencer, an unusual man for his era in that he took care of both domestic chores and management of her business affair. This represented significant commitment since Lilly bore thirteen children of whom seven survived. Her reputation grew and the family made a move to New York. She became more famous and did many portraits of wealthy people. While some find her work sentimental, she was well-known in her time. Unfortunately in her life time she lost much of that fame and found it hard to find work. She died in New York City at the age of eighty.
