Irish Manchester Martyrs Print Ireland Fenian Larkin Allen Obrien Goold Wolfhound Pub Bar Decor Poster

Product Description
The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of an incredible 1869 Irish American lithograph honoring the Manchester Martyrs of Ireland, William O’Mera Allen, Michael Larkin, and William O’Brien (also known as William Goold).
This trio of young Irish Nationalists were hanged in Manchester England on November 23, 1867 after their capture and conviction for the murder of Police Sgt. Brett during an operation to free two imprisoned members of an earlier failed Fenian rising. This is a magnificent monochrome print and features a poem honoring their actions by Mr. P. D. Farrell.
DESCRIPTION: Portraits of William Allen, Michael Larkin and William O’Brien, positioned inside a shamrock, dominate the center of the presentation. This is framed with a wreath decorated with twines of black crepe and shamrocks intertwined with The Green Flag. At the very top is a rising sun above a landscape with two allegorical figures. One figure is an old man (left side) and a woman (right side), both of whom have mournful expressions and each holding a harp at their side, unable to play because of their grief. At the bottom of the image is a scene containing some of the most powerful images of Irish history, all guarded by an Irish Wolfhound. A Celtic Cross, multiple roundtowers, a castle, a church and a backdrop of Lake Country scenes complete the tableaux. The entire print is surrounded by garlands of shamrocks. The poem and title are at the bottom of the print.
TEXT & POEM AT THE BOTTOM: At the center of the text at the bottom is the title: “The Martyrs of Ireland” above which are the last names of the trio: “Larkin, Allen and O’Brien.” The following lines of poetry by P. D. Farrell appear on the right and left of the title:
These are the three young Heroes, who for their country died,
They shall long be remembered by Erin’s child.
They lost their lives in a noble cause by English treachery,
They lost their lives for Ireland’s sake, their native Country.
In all that fought for Ireland, they were the noblest ever seen,
They fought to gain a victory, all for the Emerald Green.
This victory once accomplished, will give us our native land,
T’will remind us of our martyrs, who fought for Ireland.
Please note that the original text at the bottom was very faded and was reset using similar fonts.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT: William Allen, Michael Larkin and William O’Brien were indeed part of a group of thirty-plus men who attempted to rescue two men who had been part of an earlier Fenian Uprising—Colonel Thomas J. Kelly and Captain Timothy Deasy. What is also clear is none of these three fired the fatal shot and whoever fired the fatal shot did not deliberately intend to kill Sergeant Brett. The shot was intended only to open the door of the carriage that was used to transport the prisoners. However, Sergeant Brett had the put his eye to the keyhole at the very moment the shot was fired. He was killed. Many felt the death sentences were unjustified, but they were hanged nevertheless. Over 12,000 people gathered the day of the execution. The event inspired the song “God Save Ireland” that for years was the unofficial Irish National Anthem. Even today many in Ireland seek the return of the three remains, still held by the British Government.
