HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: World War I came as “the troubles” were happening in Ireland. The British Army was attempting to recruit Irishmen for their army. Because many Irish had emigrated to Canada, the United States and other countries, a similar recruitment effort happened in those countries. Many in Ireland opposed supporting the British Army. However, tens of thousands of men answered the call and served valiantly in the war effort. This poster was part of the recruitment effort in Ireland and every country where Irish had emigrated.

DESCRIPTION: A rich image focuses on an Irish Bagpiper, wearing a kilt, with his faithful Irish wolfhound looking at him. In the background are infantry and cavalry marching with an Erin Go Bragh flag leading the way. A beautiful orange-gold sunrise completes this poignant image.
