ARTIST: Hugh Stevenson, of Philadelphia, designed the poster for the Philadelphia Zoo and the Pennsylvania WPA. Its date of origin is around 1936.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: the Federal Arts Project, part of the WPA, gave work to artists during America’s recovery from the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the WPA (Workers Progress Administration) in 1935. Many of the artists created in the Modern Art Deco styles.
