Old FDNY NEW YORK RESCUE FIREMAN PRINT FIREFIGHTER

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction print of a fascinating 1883 lithograph depicting the scene of a fire at New York’s Potter Building, which at the time housed “The New York World”, the newspaper later made infamous by its owner, Joseph Pulitzer. At this time, most of New York’s major newspapers were located in buildings on Park Row, commonly called publisher’s row at the time. (“The New York Times" was located in the next building.) On January 31, 1882 at 10:12 p.m. a fire broke out that quickly spread through the building and trapped many people on the upper floors. While the Fire Department of New York Fire Department responded with speed and the firefighter performed bravely, twelve people died. In all, 29 NYFD fire companies responded to the fire. The problem is that in 1882, as seen in this dramatic depiction, the ladders of the fire department could not reach the upper floors. You can see the firefighters standing on the upper rungs of the ladders, attempting to reach people standing in the windows on the fourth floor or, in one case, cling to the outside of the building. All about the scene, FDNY members pour water, using steam-powered pumpers, onto the upper floors—all of this in the freezing weather.

So important was the fire that within days of it, New York Fire Department officials were examining the capabilities of their ladder companies and building commissioners were at work trying to make buildings safer.
