Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high quality reproduction print of an an exciting 1883 lithograph showing a massive Philadelphia fire engine contest involving dozens of fire companies. This remarkable full color lithograph captures the excitement of a July 7, 1850 fire engine contest held at the intersection of 5th & Market Streets in downtown Philadelphia. At a time when innovation and fire equipment were constantly changing, these contests served not only as competition, they helped spread information about these innovative techniques and equipment. Of course firefighting in the mid-nineteenth-century was by nature competitive since multiple fire companies might show up at a fire and compete for payment. Therefore, these contest served as advertising and promotion for the competing department.

Description: Ten fire companies aim hoses into the air to see who can hand pump the highest stream of water into the air. On the roof of the building, dozens of men (judges) obviously are getting wet. Other firefighters unroll hose from hose carts and connect them. Fire hoses snake over the cobblestone, some with the leaks that were the plague of firefighters in the era. Fire captains shout orders through their trumpets, both on the ground and others atop the engines near the firefighters aiming the hoses, probably counting cadence for those pumping. Many in the crowd have sought shelter in the trolley awnings in the center of Market Streets. The firefighters wear their stovepipe leather hats and colorful uniforms identifying their department. A remarkable scene captured dramatically.

CAPTION: “The Old Phil. Fire Department. Period of 1850. The Great Engine Contest On Sunday Evening July 7th 1850 At 5th & Market Sts.”

ARTIST: Chas. (Charles) H. Spieler, whose signature printed at very bottom, right.
