Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a 1936 poster produced as part of the WPA Federal Arts Project. This poster was the third of four posters (all of which are available in our store) that tracked the history of the New York Fire Department (FDNY) from its founding in 1656 until the posters were done in 1936. The arrival and use of the first fire steam engine in 1841 is the subject of this poster.

At the bottom are the silhouettes of three firefighters. Two of them are running next to a horse-drawn steam fire engine. A ladder wagon and a hand pumper are shown in the background working a burning building.

The headline reads: “History of Civic Services in the city of New York. Fire Department No. 3.”

The Caption at the bottom reads: “A Steam Engine Was Used for the First Time.”

The text box on the right reads: “…it took something like a half-an-hour to get it in operation after reaching the fire and almost invariably some part of the machinery broke down after being set in motion… ”

Vera Bock, a popular book illustrator, was the artist.
