The United States Office of War Information produced a whole series of posters using photographs, paintings and cartoon drawings to recruit and motivate the millions of women who were needed to replace the men who were entering the military.

This poster features an overall-clad woman, with a man in a suit with his hands on her shoulders. She has fists clenched in strength with her left hand clearly displaying a wedding band. The text at the bottom reads: “I’m Proud…my husband wants me to do my part.” The text below reads: “ See Your U.S. Employment Service. War Manpower Commission.”

John Newton Howitt was the artist for this poster. The name “Rosie The Riveter” came from two songwriters, Red Evans and John Jacob Loeb, in early 1943. “Rosie” represented the more than six million women who worked in the manufacturing and munitions industries of World War II. However, the reach has gone even further than this representation. In the 1970s “Rosie” was adopted as a symbol of the emerging economic power of women, who were now returning to work.
