The2funadguyz offer a very large (11X17) new print of an incredible FDNY firefighter photograph from 1911.
What makes this photo special is it shows FDNY firefighters racing through the streets of New York City on March 25, 1911. They were headed to the Triangle Shirt Waist Company fire at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place where one of the worst fires of the era was burning—trapping the young immigrant girls and women working there. So horrible was the reaction to the fire that it gave labor union organizers and reformers support from around the country.
The Triangle Shirt Waist Company occupied the top floors of a building and the floors were packed with flammable materials and chemicals—and no fire extinguishers. This photo captures a horse drawn ladder truck that was racing to the scene. The truck is just crossing 8th Avenue but we cannot make out the street that they are actually on at the time of the photo. Ironically, they raced in vain since at the time the fire department only had ladders that reached to the sixth floor. The building was not destroyed and stands today as part of the New York University campus
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: A group of mostly immigrant women workers were trapped on the ninth floor with little chance of escape. Some of the 146 who died jumped while others were burned to death. The deaths of the women became a major catalyst for a reform movement in which The Ladies International Garment Workers Union became a driving force.
