A mechanized fire engine was waiting in the background to take its place. In a very real way, this photograph captures a moment when technology was changing firefighting by the day. It must have been a bittersweet moment for many of those in the picture, particularly the driver of those three magnificent horses pulling the engine. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The first decade of the twentieth century witnessed the introduction of an incredible array of firefighting technology and equipment. Every few years a new technology replaced an older one. Horse-drawn fire wagons gave way to motorized car, fire trucks and fire engines. Steam Pumps meant greater capacity to deliver water faster. Searchlight trucks were used for fighting at night and in very smoky fires. Ladder trucks reached higher and higher as buildings grew taller and taller. In the end, however, the bravery and skills of the firemen was still the essential ingredient in successful fire department, large and small.
