Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a World War I Red Cross Christmas Fund Raising poster drawn by one of the most popular artists of era, Harrison Fisher.

This would be a great Christmas gift for a nurse, or an especially nice print for National Nurse’s Day. The Red Cross Christmas Roll Call was an annual appeal. The Red Cross provided multiple services in war zones for military and civilian people. These Christmas Roll Call Campaigns were a major source of contributions. A nurse, dressed in white and wearing a cloak, is shown with her hands outstretched, appealing for help. The nurse image is a classic Harrison Fisher execution of “The American Girl” look that he helped popularize. Harrison Fisher did the work for this and other World War I posters free of charge.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: During World War I many of the medical services for Allied soldiers were provided by the American Red Cross and the nurses who volunteered for service. The challenge of helping wounded military personnel involved in trench and gas warfare was met by thousands of truly heroic American women. To recruit these nurses many of America’s most talented artists, known for creating portraits of young women, illustrated beautiful posters that both recruited, but also romanticized, these young heroines. Many of these posters raised fund to help the American Red Cross comfort the wounded and perform their other services for civilians caught in the war zones. This poster is a prime example of this genre.

CAPTION: Join the Red Cross. All you need is a Heart and a Dollar.

ARTIST: Harrison Fisher (1875 – 1934), created many of the beautiful young women who graced the covers and insides of America’s magazines during the early part of the twentieth century. He and his compatriots gave the world “The American Girl”, at a time when the word girl had no negative context. Many were wealthy and were usually shown in leisure activities. With his pen and brush he created an enduring image of beauty for beauties’ sake—no apologies needed or accepted. For Fisher, Cosmopolitan covers became a long time venue for his art. These portraits of women were his lifetime work and today still intrigue us. For good reason he was called “The Father of a Thousand Girls.” Fisher put it more simply: “I like to draw.” We are glad he did.
