The Federal Arts Project of Louisiana, part of the WPA, was the sponsor. The poster sought to recruit citizens to serve on the Civil Defense Decontamination of New Orleans, Louisiana Squads. New Orleans was a major hub of war activity, both as a port from which ships carrying war supplies sailed and many war contractors were located there. The poster shows a man in a chemical biological protection suit using a portable contamination canister. This poster, like thousands of others in areas across the United States, recruited local citizens to assist in the war effort.

Many classroom teachers find this poster an ideal classroom teachers aid since it addressed the Federal Arts Project of the WPA and civilian activity during World War II.

ARTIST: John McCrady (1911-1968) was born in Oxford, Mississippi. After his education, McCrady eventually settled in New Orleans. Throughout his life, McCrady created paintings and drawings based on the lives of Southern poor people—both white and black. He eventually established an art school on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

This warm, patriotic image, done in earth tones, would make a handsome addition in the decor of a home den, library, or game room. It is also frequently used for commercial bar and pub decor.
