A silhouetted soldier is shown standing on a cliff, waving to departing vessels. Next to the soldier a Canadian flag waves and beneath the flag is the insignia of the 199th , including a shamrock and their motto, “Quis Separabit”. This Latin motto translates “Who shall separate us?”
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Of course the troubles in Ireland influenced what happened in Canada, but in general this unit contained both Green and Orange recruits and even had two chaplains, one Catholic and the other Methodist.
