Product Description

The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a 1915 World War I Recruitment poster for the Irish Brigades of the British Army.

The poster details the exploits of Michael O’Leary, an Irish-Canadian who won the Victoria Cross after returning to his unit in Ireland. The poster is frequently used in Home Bar and Irish Pub Décor. It also makes a great gift for Irish friends.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Then Lance Corporeal O’Leary was a 26 year-old member of the Irish Guards unit. On February 1, 1915, he was amongst a party that was advancing on enemy positions at Cuinchy, France. At a critical moment, O’Leary rushed the barricade, killing the five Germans who held it. Approximately sixty yards ahead was a second barricade that O’Leary also attacked. This position held five Germans, three of who he killed and the remaining two surrendered. According to the official account, many lives were saved by his courageous actions. O’Leary was awarded the Victoria Cross and given a field promotion to Sergeant. O’Leary volunteered again in World War II advancing to the rank of Major by his retirement. This poster is especially notable because it features O’Leary’s photo inside a Victoria Cross, the British Empire’s highest military award. Queen Victoria created the medal in 1856 towards the end of the Crimean War. Each medal is a special cast of metal melted from Russian guns that were captured at Sevastopol. O’Leary originally had served in the Irish Guards between 1909 and 1913. Following that term of service, O’Leary moved to Saskatchewan province of Canada. When World War I commenced, he rejoined his Irish unit after which they were shipped to France. During the war, O’Leary was active in recruitment of Irishmen into the British Army. This poster is but one example of his effort.
