HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The sinking of the Lusitania was a pivotal moment in coalescing anti-German opinion around the world. The Lusitania was a passenger ship, also rumored to have been carrying munitions, that was sunk by a German submarine in waters near Kinsale Head, Ireland on May 7, 1915. The torpedoed ship sank in 18 minutes with a loss of life of 1195 people. It had sailed from New York and was on its way to Liverpool.
