The2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of an interesting 1915 World War I Recruitment poster for the Overseas Irish Canadian Rangers, or the 199th, as it was designated in Canada.

It is interesting because it is based on a famous painting popularly called “Whistler’s Mother” by James McNeil Whistler. However, this is not the gray toned work that Whistler did. Instead, the grays of the Whistler Work have been changed to a bright orange. The “Mother” of this work is similarly posed seated in a high back chair. By the time this poster was done, “Whistler’s Mother” had become a symbol of motherly love and duty and the affection of her children. Thus, the admonition at the top of the poster, “fight for her” is a call to protect not just mothers, but also the values for which they stand.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Of course the political situation in Ireland influenced what happened in Canada, but this unit contained both Green and Orange Irish recruits and even had two chaplains, one Catholic and the other Methodist.

ARTIST: Hal Ross Perrigard (1891-1960) created this poster as a derivative from the famous “Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Artist’s Mother” or “Whistlers Mother”, by James McNeil Whistler. The smaller box to the viewer’s immediate left reads: “Hal Ross Perrigard after Whistler.”

ORIGINAL MEDIA: Harris Lithographing Co. Ltd., Toronto, did the original lithograph that served as the basis of this new print.
