The2FunAdGuyz present a new print of an incredible 1917 vintage Red Cross nurses poster from the World War I era designed to solicit donations of surgical dressings.

Service is the title of the poster, which features a uniformed nurse with her hand outstretched above a multitude of the flags of the various Allied Nations. The border of the poster features illustrations of a wide variety of the medical supplies of the day labeled: drains, compresses, bath mitt, elbow rest, tampon, bed sock, bandages, fracture pillow. There was no more powerful symbol of sacrifice and care than that of the nurse, particularly a Red Cross nurse. Considering the sacrifice and service of the nurse, people could contribute medical supplies to aid in their work. This would make an excellent addition to a collection of Red Cross memorabilia. This poster will make a great gift for a nurse’s graduation day or National Nurses Day.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: During World War I many of the medical services for Allied soldiers were provided by the American Red Cross and the nurses who volunteered for service. The challenge of helping wounded military personnel involved in trench and gas warfare was met by thousands of truly heroic American women. To recruit these nurses many of America’s most talented artists, known for creating portraits of young women, illustrated beautiful posters that both recruited, but also romanticized, these young heroines. Many of these posters solicited funds and supplies to help nurses comfort the wounded and perform their other services. This poster is a prime example of this genre.
