John Mills created the powerful image. A devastated battlefield is the scene. In this very strong, heart-wrenching image, a uniformed, young Red Cross Nurse is shown dragging a wounded soldier from the trenches of a heavily shelled battlefield with even the trees stripped of their leaves. Because of the size of the man, the nurse is struggling to save him. The Red Cross Emblem is on the nurse’s cap and armband. This poster served both as a call for contributions and a call to other nurses to help.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: During World War I many of the medical services for Allied soldiers were provided by the American Red Cross and the nurses who volunteered for service. The challenge of helping wounded military personnel involved in trench and gas warfare was met by thousands of truly heroic American women. To recruit these nurses many of America’s most talented artists, known for creating portraits of young women, illustrated beautiful posters that both recruited, but also romanticized, these young heroines. Many of these posters solicited funds and supplies to help nurses comfort the wounded and perform their other services. This poster is a prime example of this genre.
